Telling stories is one of humanity's oldest urges, as evidenced by the petroglyphs on the walls of the Lascaux caves, to the story of Beowulf, through to the works of Euripides and Shakespeare. Their words and images echo through the years, thanks to the theatrical tradition and allow us to know these ancient peoples who aren't so different from ourselves as we pass these stories down to a new generation. There's a commonality in the stories told, and why Shakespeare's words still resonate today. Times change and evolve and the Industrial Revolution changes society, but the basic nature of humanity remains the same. As we saw with the pandemic, human connection is vital to everyone's well-being. Theatre strengthens and furthers that connection, and unites us in a beautifully unique way that is personal to each person who watches.
