Middleway Urban Monastery provides a space to dabble with one's spirituality either on your own or with our community of spiritual directors from all walks of life. No proselytizing, no telling you how to think, no judging. We allow you to question and discover God. Middleway comes from the ancient phrase, "via media," which is to go by the middle, everything in moderation, neither too far to the right or left.
We started as a virtual space in 2020 during the Covid pandemic and also as a response to the Pew Research Institutes report on the 2019 Religion in America study which indicated a decline in people affiliating with any religion. Reports indicate that the pandemic led to an even larger drop in the numbers affiliated with religion. We are a new concept, not only for the Brazos Valley but in the nation. We want to maintain and grow this effort to reach people who are spiritual seekers. We believe it is good for the community.

Middleway is open Tuesday-Friday and some Saturdays and Sundays. Drop in for a visit or attend a special program. It's free. We are not a church but a godly place for people to come explore their spirituality. So, if you have become disaffiliated with traditional church and yet still seek God, or you are actively attending a church but want additional experiences in spiritual growth, we're the place.
We have a library with more than 1,600 books pertaining to spirituality. These can be checked out freely. We also have an art area stocked with a large variety of supplies free for use. A children's area is equipped with books and items aimed at helping a child express their thoughts/feelings about God. Various sitting areas are located at the monastery, including an icon room and a meditation room. As a monastery, we practice a rhythm of prayer which includes three brief prayer services daily - morning, noon, and evening. Hospitality for all is a mainstay at the monastery, so complimentary coffee, tea, apple cider, hot chocolate and water, along with various nibbles, are available for all visitors.
