Education should be the great equalizer, but children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds start school behind their more affluent peers - and most never catch up. And the cycle of poverty continues for generations. But at Books from Birth, we are using research-based methods to interrupt that cycle.
Research shows that access to books at home from an early age is the best predictor of academic and career success - regardless of parent education levels or income. Research also shows that over 60% of children living in poverty don't have a single children's book at home. But with your help, Books from Birth can change that.
This year, we will distribute over 20,000 books to over 8,000 underserved children in the Brazos Valley. Our Board covers all administrative costs, so every dollar goes to purchasing books. And thanks to partnerships with publishers, we can purchase high-quality, high-interest books for an average of just $1. This means every dollar you give puts a book into the hands of a child in need!
We partner with high-poverty clinics and schools, as well as the Brazos County Salvation Army's Angel Tree program to get books to children from birth through age twelve. Together, we can give the children of the Brazos Valley a lifetime of literacy and a path out of poverty.
