The Brenham Heritage Museum (BHM) has served Washington County since 1991, currently operating the historic Bus Depot and Post Office Museum buildings. The Post Office building recently reopened in November 2022 after being closed for several years following record rainfall in 2016. The Brenham Heritage Museum preserves the valuable history of Brenham and Washington County and provides educational resources which further the interests of the city as well as inform and captivate audiences from around the state and the world. Since November 2022, the museum has added beautiful new exhibits, including the new Maifest Kiosk. Going forward, BHM has even more big plans for new permanent exhibits which reflect Brenham's historic past as well as exciting programming such as partnering with the city to host the Smithsonian's Museum on Main Street Program and more. The Brenham Heritage Museum has an incredible impact beyond the community. The museum frequently has visitors from as far away as Europe and Africa. Not a week goes by where visitors are not coming from out of town to learn more about the history of Brenham. In November of 2022, the museum completed a multi-million-dollar restoration of the National Register Historic 1916 Post Office Building, a unique and valuable city asset. Thanks to the efforts of the museum and the museum supporters, this treasured landmark will continue to benefit the people of Brenham for another 100 years and more!
