Let me tell you about a child, a girl of thirteen, to whom I was assigned as an advocate. She suffered depression and ptsd that led to self-harm, terrible nightmares that kept her from sleeping, daytime trauma induced by strange smells or unexpected sounds, all as a result of a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. No thirteen year old girl should suffer ptsd. When I took her case, she said that everybody she knew had abandoned her. I was not going to be the next one. Her experience in foster care was marked by setbacks and disappointments, but also progress. It required a lot of people to stand beside her, but she faced her dragons and beat them. She is now in a loving, forever home and finishing high school as an honor student. Dragons come in many sizes and shapes.
