For many of the children we serve, the most important interaction of their lives happens within the walls of Scotty's House. Every child that comes through our doors is welcomed by a compassionate team of professionals who advocate for their safety, healing, and justice.
For over 29 years, Scotty's House has provided safety, healing, and justice for child victims of crime in the Brazos Valley region. With a compassionate and collaborative approach, we facilitate care in all areas of the child abuse investigation process, from the initial report to the recovery stage, and everything in between. Utilizing the proven Child Advocacy Center (CAC) model, we provide initial needs assessments and advocacy support, forensic interviews and medical evaluations, as well as counseling for child victims and their families.
Scotty's House was founded in 1995 in honor of Scotty, the son of a local pediatrician, Kathleen Burford. In March 1982, seven months after being abducted from his daycare center in Bryan, Texas, four-year-old Scotty was tragically shot to death by his father as FBI agents were closing in to rescue him. Scotty's House is dedicated to the memory of Scotty and to all children who have suffered abuse and/or neglect.
In response to this terrible act, the Brazos Valley community came together to begin Scotty's House. In 1995, when we were founded, we served the first 58 children. In 2023, 1,189 children received healing services at Scotty's House. A breakdown of those services include:
754 forensic interviews.
789 families received family advocacy and support services.
119 medical exams, including 43 on-site at Scotty's House.
3,226 counseling sessions: 2,710 to children and 516 to adults.
745 cases reviewed by our multidisciplinary team (MDT).
Scotty's House Brazos Valley Child Advocacy Center (Scotty's House) coordinates the investigation and healing services for the most severe cases of child abuse in the Brazos Valley. Scotty's House is the only provider of trauma-informed mental health services to child victims of abuse and the only nonprofit involved in the investigation of crimes against children. Our average client is a 10-year-old girl, sexually abused by someone she knows and trusts.
